MY STORY
Since I was a kid, I have adored every aspect of art. From its ability to communicate a message with such simplicity or complexity, to how it can convey so many emotions, and its capacity to portray God’s creation in the most beautiful ways. Whether it’s music, photography, painting, drawing, writing or design, art has always been something incredibly precious to me. As someone who couldn’t sing or play an instrument growing up, I thought that what I had to offer the Lord was less than my peers, in which I was incredibly mistaken.
Throughout childhood I developed a strong conviction and desire to use what God had created in me to create for Him. Since then, this desire has only grown. Everywhere you turn you see the artistry of our Creator. As Psalm 19 states, “the heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” From the majesty of ocean waves to the magnificence of a mountaintop, God is the ultimate artist.
When I was a sophomore in high school, a friend who was a Moody student gave me three books that a team at her college had published. She said, “Kayla, you will love these.”
The books were filled with photography, paintings, drawings, poems, etc. All of these various forms of art created by students were combined in a book that connected art and
theology — two things that I never knew could be so beautifully intertwined.
When God called me to Moody Bible Institute the thing that I was most blown away by was the fact that my education would revolve around these two things: the thing that I
love most about this world and the God who created it.
Through a friend at Moody, I learned about OneWay, a ministry that combines missions and media. From photography and graphic design to missionary work, OneWay uses art and creativity to further God’s Kingdom, and I wanted nothing more than to be a part of that process. I believe God has placed me at OneWay to do exactly that — to use the gifts He has given me to further His Kingdom.
Please pray that my time at OneWay would be edifying and that God would work in me and through me as well as the community of interns to do a great work this summer.
